The weird world of Driving lessons

Frustration is growing with people frantically searching for driving lessons only to be met with unanswered calls and sorry we’re fully booked from instructors.

So, why are you struggling to get driving lessons?

The culprit is COVID…

In 2021 after the lock downs finally came to an end, hundreds of thousands of teenagers had turned 17 but couldn’t start lessons. This list of eager learners joined the list of people waiting to continue lessons from the previous year when lessons were stopped.

Now combine those thousands of learners with people turning seventeen in 2021/22 and 23 ready to start their driving lessons, and you can see driving instructors had nearly three times the amount of people wanting lessons than usual.

And as we approach 2024 instructors are still struggling to cope with the demand for driving lessons almost three years after the lock downs.

Because of the lock downs, the industry lost a lot of driving instructors who couldn’t manage to make ends meet, so they left to take up new careers.

Also many instructors with health issues retired fearful of getting COVID when they returned, So by the time we were allowed back to work in 2021 the industry was massively short of driving instructors.

It’s a crazy world at the moment, and people will do almost anything to get a full driving licence. Learners are booking driving test hundreds of miles away from where they live just to pass quickly.

Who know’s when driving lessons will get back to normal!

But this is What not to do: 

Avoid booking a driving test if you’re not already taking lessons with a driving instructor. People are using test cancellation apps to get early dates only to find there’s no one to take them for the test.

I would  recommend to get your name down on as many driving instructors waiting lists as possible. And try using the Yellow pages directory online – yell.com to find more of the local instructors.

If you can find time for driving lessons between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, you stand a much better chance of getting an instructor.
