Driving Test Swap Rules 2026: What Learners Need to Know

New DVSA Driving Test Swap Rules from 12 May 2026: What Learners Need to Know

From 12 May 2026, the rules around swapping driving tests are changing.

This matters if you already have a driving test booked and you are thinking about swapping your test slot with another learner. It also matters if you were hoping your driving instructor, a parent, or a third-party website could sort it for you.

They can’t.

Under the new DVSA rules, only the learner driver can swap their own car driving test. Instructors, websites, apps, friends, and family members are not allowed to do it for you.

What Is a Driving Test Swap?

A driving test swap is when you and another learner driver exchange your existing test bookings.

You are not searching for a new test date.

You are not changing your test in the normal way.

You are simply swapping your booked test with another learner who wants your exact slot.

For example:

You have a test booked in July, but another learner has one in June. You both agree to exchange test dates, times, and centres.

That is a test swap.

But be careful. A test swap still counts as one of the two changes you are allowed to make to your driving test booking.

Who Can Swap a Driving Test?

Driving test swap rules are changing from 12 May 2026

From 12 May 2026, only the learner driver can swap their own car driving test.

That means:

Your driving instructor cannot swap it for you.

A cancellation website cannot swap it for you.

A friend or parent cannot swap it for you.

You must speak to DVSA yourself and confirm you agree to the swap.

This rule is being introduced to help stop misuse of the booking system and make test bookings fairer for genuine learners.

When Can You Swap Your Driving Test?

You can only swap your driving test if both learners meet the DVSA rules.

Both of you must have:

A valid car driving test booking.

At least one change left on your booking.

The same type of test booking.

A test that is at least 10 full working days away from the earliest test date.

DVSA counts Monday to Saturday as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not count.

The Location Rules Are Changing Too

There are two stages to this.

Before 9 June 2026, you can swap with a learner who has a test booked at any driving test centre.

From 9 June 2026, the rules become tighter.

You will only be able to swap with a learner whose test is booked at:

The same test centre as you.

One of your three nearest test centres.

The test centre you originally booked.

Both learners must meet the location rules, or DVSA will not complete the swap.

You Can Only Swap Like-for-Like Tests

This is where many learners may get caught out.

You cannot swap any test with any other test.

The test type must match.

That means:

A weekday test can only be swapped with another weekday test.

An evening, weekend, or bank holiday test can only be swapped with the same type.

A test with extra time because of a disability, health condition, or learning difficulty can only be swapped with the same type.

An extended test for disqualified drivers can only be swapped with the same type of extended test.

Speak to Your Driving Instructor First

Before you agree to swap your driving test, speak to your instructor.

This is important.

You need to check two things:

First, will you be ready for the new test date?

Second, is your instructor available to take you to the test at the new date, time, and test centre?

There is no point swapping into an earlier test if you are not ready or your instructor cannot attend.

That could cost you money, confidence, and possibly your chance of passing.

How Do You Swap Your Driving Test?

You can only swap your driving test by phone.

You cannot swap it:

Online.

By email.

By text.

By webchat.

Through WhatsApp.

Through DVSA social media.

To request a swap, one learner calls DVSA. DVSA will then call the other learner using the phone number already attached to their test booking.

What You Need Before Calling DVSA

Before you call, make sure you have:

Your driving licence number.

Your driving test booking reference number.

Details of the payment card used to book the test, unless your instructor booked it before the rule change.

Details of any previous driving tests you have taken.

The other learner’s driving test booking reference number.

You do not need the other learner’s personal details.

In fact, DVSA advises learners not to share personal information such as driving licence numbers, theory test certificate numbers, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, or payment card details with another learner.

Check Your Contact Details Before You Call

Before trying to swap, sign in to your driving test booking and check your phone number and email address are correct.

DVSA will use the details on your booking to complete the swap.

If the other learner does not answer the phone, or their number is wrong, the swap will not go ahead.

Updating your contact details does not count as one of your two allowed changes.

What Happens After the Swap?

Once DVSA completes the swap:

You get the other learner’s original test date, time, and centre.

They get yours.

Both booking records are updated.

You keep your own booking reference number.

You keep your own payment details.

Any special requirements on your booking stay in place.

DVSA says you will not receive an email confirmation straight away, but your next reminder email will show the new test details.

Our Advice to Learners

Do not rush into a driving test swap just because you find an earlier date.

An earlier test is only useful if you are properly prepared.

Before swapping, ask yourself:

Am I genuinely ready?

Has my instructor agreed I am ready?

Can my instructor take me to the test?

Is the test centre suitable for me?

Do I understand that this uses one of my two allowed changes?

A driving test is not just a date in the diary. It is your chance to prove you are safe, confident, and ready to drive independently.

Swapping can be useful, but only when it makes sense.
