Why instructor availability is so tight

There are a few reasons why finding a driving instructor can be difficult.

First, the back log from COVID has created high demand, because all the people who wanted lessons couldn’t get them, and had to wait over a year.

The industry lost a huge amount of instructors who moved on to other occupations. 

Good instructors often have full diaries.

A driving instructor can only have a certain number of regular pupils every week, and because lessons are reoccurring weekly their spaces are limited.

Many learners want the same lesson times every week, meaning it’s hard to work around other people schedules.

Other people’s, availability changes quickly, so it’s hard for instructors to manage gaps.

That means an instructor cannot always give a space to someone new unless they can keep offering that same time in future weeks.

The busiest times for lessons are after college (3.30 to the end of the day) during the weekdays, and anytime on a weekend.

Instructors generally work 8am till 6pm, and many don’t  work after 6pm or on weekends. Therefore finding lessons during the peak times can be a challenge. 

Why booking early matters more than ever

The driving test booking rules are also changing.

DVSA has confirmed that, from 31 March 2026, learners are only allowed to make 2 changes to their car driving test booking. From 12 May 2026, learners will need to book and manage their own car driving test, and instructors will no longer be allowed to do it for them. (GOV.UK)

That means learners need to be more careful when planning.

You do not want to book a test date that is unrealistic.

You do not want to make changing dates without knowing you can commit to it.

And you definitely do not want to book a test before you have proper training in place.

The best approach is to work with your instructor, build your skills, and aim for a test date that matches your progress.

You may need to be patient.

The best approach is to get your name on everyone’s waiting list.

Be ready to book when a suitable space appears. When you find a gap, don’t dilly, dally because they get snapped up quickly.

Expect to pay in advance to book your first lesson.

Because you are new to an instructor, they don’t know who you are. So to guarantee you are genuine, and will turn up for the lesson they will ask for payment. 

Think about it this way, you can’t reserve a seat on an airline without paying at the time of booking.
