Become a Driving instructor 5 Star customer reviewJo Page – Anlaby

I first enquired about potentially training as an ADI back in May 2025. Straight away, Kev was in touch with me, told me loads of information and what was involved.

I signed up relatively quickly, and since then has continuously offered support and guidance through the entire process.

Training to be a Driving Instructor is not an easy task, there are three tests to pay for and pass.

Kev assisted me through all three with useful resources (for the theory test), took me on drives to fine tune my actual driving (for the part 2 practical test), and gave me intense role play scenarios to prep me for the part three – which is the instructional ability test.

It was a lot of work, but Kev always maintained a cheery and positive outlook. He was available whenever I had a question; I held back most of my nerves and anxieties but I think he knew they were there.

I passed my part 3 on the first attempt.

I’ve been a licenced trainee for over six months with Elite, and will stay with them now I am a full ADI. It allows me to have options of when I work, which I hope will mean I can change my career direction in the next year.

Train to become a driving instructor

I called Elite and within a few hours they called me back and I spoke to Kev, who was actually the guy who ended up teaching me and training me.

Kev put me through my Part 1 training, and gave me all the stuff that I needed to help me. I passed my Part 2 after just a handful of hours with a clean sheet. And for my Part 3, Elite and Kev were there for me all the way. Whenever I had a problem, Elite have definitely been there for me.

With Elite You get a lot of support and the end results are absolutely phenomenal, I passed all three tests at the first attempt, amazing team.

Working as a Driving Instructor on a Trainee Licence

The trainee licence helps you gain real world experience teaching learners how to drive while earning an income to support your training. This is useful because you are under supervision from your ADI trainer who can help you develop your skills and confidence in the early stages of taking students for driving lessons.

You are required to have a driving instructor or driving school to sponsor you while on a trainee licence.

When you take you part three test, you’ll be asked to give a client centered lesson to a learner or full licence holder, with a supervising driving examiner observing the lesson from the back seat of your training vehicle.

You don’t need to take the option of a driving instructor trainee licence. If you have friends or family members who you can practice your teaching ability with, they will help you develop your skills and knowledge before taking the part three test.

How long does it take to qualify?

It takes an average of 4 to 6 months to become a driving instructor, depending on your pace and availability. This period includes passing three DVSA exams Theory, practical and instructional. This time-frame can be shortened by intensive training courses, but factors like test availability will still effect it.

If I take low training fees or cash back will I be tied to the training company

Probably yes. You’ve heard the saying, “you get what you pay for.” It’s true here too. Instructor training is labour — you’re paying for someone’s time. If a driving instructor can earn £40 an hour teaching learners, why would they offer cheap training?

Most schools that promote “cheap” or “cashback” training do so to tie new instructors into long-term franchise contracts. These contracts guarantee the school gets more than their investment back.

Before you pay anything, ask about the terms. Even with offers, you’ll usually still have to cover your training costs — especially if you don’t finish the course or fail the exams.

Typical contracts last 2–3 years, sometimes longer, so do your research.

If you’d rather avoid long-term commitments, it’s better to pay the standard training fees — around £2,600 on average.

Can I train in my local area?

It depends on your training provider. If you want to guarantee your training takes place locally, choose a driving school that’s based in your area. Larger national schools often arrange training at locations where their instructors are available, which may mean travelling to a different area.

What does it cost to train?

If you want to train to become a driving instructor with personal, in-car tuition, expect to pay around £40 or more per hour. Most trainees need over 50 hours of practical training, so the total cost usually works out at about £2,500.

Alternatively, you can choose online training courses, which start from around £600. However, these don’t include any in-car practice, so you’ll normally need to spend an additional £2,000 for the practical side.

There’s also the option of classroom-based training which can cost from £20 per hour, but like online courses, you’ll still need to pay extra for your practical sessions.

Do I need any prior experience?

No, but previous teaching experience or customer service background is an advantage, but quality training will prepare you for a rewarding career as a driving instructor.

Can I train around another job?

Yes, many training companies are able to offer evening and weekend training options.

What’s included in the job guarantee?

There are very few driving schools in the UK that actually employ driving instructors. The majority offer guaranteed franchises, meaning you’re self employed but the school will use their brand and experience to get your customers and help you run a successful driving instructor business.
