Part Two module: The driving ability test, which aims to test you driving skills at a much higher standard than a normal driving test.
The test takes approximately one hour, and starts with the eye sight check. You should be able to read a new style number plate from a minimum distance of 26.5 metres.
Before the drive, you will be asked three Tell Me questions, example: How would you check the brakes are working in your vehicle before starting a journey?
During the drive you will also be asked two show me questions, example: Show me how to use the horn to warn others?
You will also be asked to do two of four possible exercises, from the following:
- Reversing into a parking space
- Driving forwards into a bay and reversing from it
- Reverse parking behind another vehicle
- Pulling up on the righthand side of the carriageway and reversing back for two car lengths
During the test there will be a section for independent driving where you will be asked to follow signs, or a preprogrammed
sat Nav Route which lasts approximately 20 minutes.
You will be marked on driver errors committed, & major or serious mistakes.
Driving errors: These are minor errors that are not necessary a safety issue at the time, but an accumulation of no more
than six minors errors will result in a test failure.
Major faults: Are marked because of a potentially dangerous situation and will result in a test fail.
Serious faults: Are safety critical errors, where the driving examiner may take control, and can result in the test being
terminated.
