I want to learn to drive. Where do I start?
Start by getting your provisional licence, then find an instructor with availability in your area.
You don’t need to know anything about driving before your first lesson. That’s what the lessons are for. You just need to decide whether you’d like to start in a manual or automatic car — and even that decision doesn’t have to be forever.
Should I learn manual or automatic?
It depends on what car you want after you pass.
Pass in a manual and you can drive manual or automatic cars. Pass in an automatic and your licence will be restricted to automatics.
How many driving lessons will I need?
There’s no magic number.
Some people pick driving up quickly. Others need longer to build confidence, judgement and consistency. There is no minimum number of professional lessons you legally have to take.
A good instructor should tell you honestly how you’re progressing rather than trying to sell you a predetermined number of hours.
Is one lesson a week enough?
It can be, but consistency matters.
Long gaps between lessons can mean spending part of the next lesson getting back to where you were on the last. If your time and budget allow it, regular lessons generally make it easier to keep building on what you’ve already learned.
The best schedule is one you can realistically keep up.
What actually happens on my first driving lesson?
Already driven before? Tell your instructor. There’s no point spending half the lesson teaching you things you can already do.
But if you’re a new driver you’ll start in a very quiet area.
Your instructor will normally start with explaining the car controls, seating position, and mirrors. You’ll then try your hand at and the basics of moving off and stopping safely, and changing gears if your taking manual lessons. How quickly things progress from there depends on you.
I'm really nervous about driving. Is that a problem?
Not at all.
Plenty of confident drivers were nervous learners. You don’t need confidence before you start — confidence normally comes from understanding what you’re doing and doing it successfully.
Tell your instructor what worries you. A good lesson should stretch you without constantly making you feel out of your depth.
Can I practice with my parents between lessons?
Yes, providing you and the supervising driver meet the legal requirements and the car is properly insured for you to drive.
Private practice can be really useful because it gives you more time behind the wheel. It’s worth speaking to your instructor first though, so whoever takes you out knows what you’re currently working on.
Two people teaching you completely different ways of doing the same thing isn’t particularly helpful.
When should I book my driving test?
You must pass your theory test before you can book the practical test. Speak to your instructor about when you’re realistically likely to be ready, then book your test yourself through GOV.UK.
Current DVSA rules mean you must book and manage your own test, and you only get two changes to the appointment — so choosing a sensible date matters.
