Meet Our Successful Instructors
I can honestly say that I don’t think I would be where I am today if it wasn’t for the support that I received from Kevin, Hollie, and my excellent trainer Stuart. The journey from trainee instructor to fully qualified ADI has been the most challenging undertaking of my life. I am proud to call myself an Elite instructor,
— Rob Caton, Hull
Going into the training I wasn’t sure what to expect or if I’d even be good enough, but Kev and Stu were great the whole way through, always making sure that someone was available, whether it was for time in the car with me or even just to answer questions, but the main thing is they were honest, so I knew exactly what was needed and expected of me.
— Phil Hardcastle, Hull
The training I received from Kev & Stu was great. I went down the PDI route and it was the better option for me. Stu the trainer was amazing and always at hand to help with any questions. The owner Kev was full of knowledge about the industry, which helped me to pass my ADI part 3.
— Rory Wilson, Hull

How long does it take to qualify?
It takes an average of 4 to 6 months to become a driving instructor, depending on your pace and availability. This period includes passing three DVSA exams Theory, practical and instructional. This time-frame can be shortened by intensive training courses, but factors like test availability will still effect it.
If I take low training fees or cash back will I be tied to the training company
Probably yes. You’ve heard the saying, “you get what you pay for.” It’s true here too. Instructor training is labour — you’re paying for someone’s time. If a driving instructor can earn £40 an hour teaching learners, why would they offer cheap training?
Most schools that promote “cheap” or “cashback” training do so to tie new instructors into long-term franchise contracts. These contracts guarantee the school gets more than their investment back.
Before you pay anything, ask about the terms. Even with offers, you’ll usually still have to cover your training costs — especially if you don’t finish the course or fail the exams.
Typical contracts last 2–3 years, sometimes longer, so do your research.
If you’d rather avoid long-term commitments, it’s better to pay the standard training fees — around £2,600 on average.
Can I train in my local area?
It depends on your training provider. If you want to guarantee your training takes place locally, choose a driving school that’s based in your area. Larger national schools often arrange training at locations where their instructors are available, which may mean travelling to a different area.
What does it cost to train?
If you want to train to become a driving instructor with personal, in-car tuition, expect to pay around £50 or more per hour. Most trainees need over 50 hours of practical training, so the total cost usually works out at about £2,500.
Alternatively, you can choose online training courses, which start from around £600. However, these don’t include any in-car practice, so you’ll normally need to spend an additional £2,000 for the practical side.
There’s also the option of classroom-based training which can cost from £25 per hour, but like online courses, you’ll still need to pay extra for your practical sessions.
Do I need any prior experience?
No, but previous teaching experience or customer service background is an advantage, but quality training will prepare you for a rewarding career as a driving instructor.
Can I train around another job?
Yes, many training companies are able to offer evening and weekend training options.
What’s included in the job guarantee?
There are very few driving schools in the UK that actually employ driving instructors. The majority offer guaranteed franchises, meaning you’re self employed but the school will use their brand and experience to get your customers and help you run a successful driving instructor business.
