The quickest time frame to learn to drive a car is within a week, but this doesn’t mean it’s the fastest way to pass a driving test.
An intensive course is in two parts:
- The driving lessons
- The driving test
You are taking Driving lessons with a DVSA approved driving instructor, but you are taking the driving test with a DVSA driving examiner. This means that the intensive course doesn’t influence the driving test date.
Driving instructors are independent to the DVSA, who is an executive agency of the department of transport, whereas driving instructors are self-employed professionals.
Driving instructors and driving schools do not have any influence over a test date. Effectively they use the same DVSA driving test booking platform to book a driving test as their customers do, meaning they can’t jump the queue.
When you book an intensive course, the school go to the DVSA driving test booking platform to find the next available driving test date (which is the exact same date the public can book). They will then book your course of lessons to start the week or the duration you have chosen before the driving test date.
Example: If you choose a one week intensive driving course, the driving school will book the driving test for the earliest date, say 3 months, meaning your one week course will start in 2 months and three weeks time.
If there is a long delay to get a driving test, you might be as well just taking a regular 90 minute weekly lesson, or even two to three lessons each week running up to your driving test.
If you live in a city where the average amount of lessons taken to be test ready is 35 hours, then here’s an example of how many weeks, or months you could be learning:
Just one 60 minute lesson each week will result in learning over 35 weeks or 9 months.
Just one 90 minute lesson each week will result in learning over 24 weeks or 6 months.
Just one 120 minute lesson each week will result in learning over 18 weeks or 4.5 months.
Taking 9 hours each week, example 6 x 90 minute lessons will result in learning over 4 weeks or 1 months.
