To become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in the UK, you’ll need to successfully complete three parts of a rigorous qualification process set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Don’t let this intimidate you – with the right training, it’s a clear, achievable path.
Part 1: The Theory Test (Knowledge is Power)
- This is a computer-based exam covering driving theory, highway code, road safety, and instructional techniques. It includes multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test.

Is being a driving instructor worth it?
Yes definitely, but If you haven’t any experience of running a business then start by working for a franchise. A good franchise will supply you with customers and training while you build your experience and reputation.
Find the right franchise and they will save you a lot of time, cost and stress.
If I take low training fees or cash back will I be tied to the training company
Yes most probably. You’ve heard the quote ‘you get what you pay for’ Well it’s true in this industry too. Training is labor, you are paying for someones time. Think about it this way, if a driving instructor can earn £35 per hour, why would they give away cheap or free time!
The most common reason driving schools offer cheap training, or cash back is to get instructors working with their driving school. The contact term ensures that they will get their investment back.
Check with the training company before you hand over any money about these offers. Generally you will still be required to pay for your training because part way through your training you might decide not complete the course, or you might fail the exams and therefore cannot be a driving instructor. If the instructor training you has given free or cheap lessons they are going to be out of pocket.
Contracts are generally 2 to 3 years but some can be a lot longer so do your research.
If you want to avoid being tied into long term contracts then you can pay the normal training fees which on average are about £2600
Do I have to work evenings and weekends?
Not at all, in fact many instructors don’t work evenings or weekends. There’s enough people taking lessons during the day to fill your diary every week. But you might need the experience of a driving school to get the right customers for you.
If I decide to set up by myself what will I need to do?
As soon as you qualify you can either work for yourself or a driving school. Working for yourself means you are learning as you go, and therefore you won’t always get it right.
You will also have to source your own customers in a very competitive industry. Most new instructors know a dozen or so people who want lessons, but you’ll need enough to fill your diary.
You’ll also need to know how to find customers who live close to each other to reduce travel time to a minimum.
New instructors often require regular training to help them develop their skills, and they also need help with the organisation and administration of work involved in being a self-employed driving instructor.
Is the work reliable?
Yes if you know what you’re doing. Some instructors who work by themselves from the start may struggle for quite sometime until they build up their experience and reputation.
If you start with a reputable driving school they will keep you busy from day one, and are well worth your investment.
Are the start up costs expensive?
No not at all. Training is your biggest expense, and when you think about it as an investment, when you qualify just one client has the potential to earn your entire training fees back. Not bad when you think you’ve just got a job for life from such a small investment.
If you start with a franchise driving school most require a months franchise fee in advance, so not big start up costs there either.
Going it alone might incur more costs, although you can lease a car with just a months payment upfront. You will require vehicle insurance, and a few essential tools, plus customers.
Is it hard to pass the exams?
You will need to put a lot of time and work into research and study, plus you’ll need the guidance of a good trainer. The theory test and the driving test are quite straight forward, after all you’ve already passed a driving test before.
The instructional exam is the most difficult and to be honest people do fail and not qualify. So you must be prepared to put in some work and get guidance from the experts.
